Enough (2024)
Enough (2024)
Enough (2024) is a sculptural work made using industrial expander-foam, plaster, paint and garments. It comprises two figurative, headless sculptures (busts). The busts are stylised, but it is obvious that one represents a male, and one represents a female. The exposed female form is naked yet adorned with intricate symbols and serves as a visual metaphor for the expectations imposed upon women. These symbols represent concerns ranging from beauty standards to domesticity, critiquing the pervasive objectification and idealisation of femininity. The female bust is vulnerable and exposed, and the weight of societal expectations and restrictions hold her down, below the man. Her body is covered in responsibilities and roles that she is required to play while also showing some of the pain that she has had to endure as a woman. Through this confronting representation I aim to shed light on the limitations and challenges faced by women when navigating fitting into society. In contrast, the male bust represents social privilege. He stands tall and embodies confidence and entitlement often associated with masculinity. The painted words “this is enough” across his t-shirt show that he has assurance that he is enough as is. There is zero questioning what is expected of him. This contrasts text on the female bust, “is this enough?” I hope this work sparks thought and discussion on gender inequality and social justice, to challenge and inspire people to be a part of the solution.
