What if I don’t want to eat cake? (2023) 1.4 minute short film
What if I don’t want to eat cake? (2023) is a film work that features a young woman, dressed in lingerie with clown makeup. Overlaid on her is a projection of a continuous reel of fashion imagery featuring stereotypically “beautiful” women and flowers. Over the span of the film, the young woman continues to eat a huge chocolate cake, binging on it, without stopping. The cake is used metaphorically in this work to represent an overconsumption of media, especially media related to body image, while the clown makeup on the young woman speaks to a need for women to mask their concerns to fit in. This process of media consumption is both forced and relentless, like the obsessive act of binging, at once violent and compulsive.
